MIKES

Mike’s 1950 is an anniversary cigar for both its owner and manufacturer. The name honors Mike Mersel of Mike’s Cigars and the opening of his cigar shop back in 1950. The cigar was released on Quesada’s 30th anniversary.
Mike moved to Florida in the late 1930’s to escape the brutal northern winters in New York. Mike and his brother Albert “Ossie” sold newspapers
until they were drafted to serve in World War II. In 1950, the brothers returned and opened a cigar shop on Arthur Godfrey Road in Miami Beach.
Mike established friendly relationships with his snowbird customers. They asked Mike to ship them cigars when they returned to their northern homes, pushing Mike to enter the mail-order catalog business for cigars.
In 1981, Mike brought in Oscar Boruchin, a former regional manager for General Cigar Company. Oscar had beneficial relationships with big names in the cigar industry, like Arthuro Fuente and General Cigar Co., which helped Mike’s Cigars keep up supply and survive during the cigar boom of the 1990’s.
The business soon outgrew the shop in Mid-Beach and was relocated to the upscale Bal Harbor location. Mike’s Cigar’s current location offers ten times more square footage and includes a bustling warehouse to service its wholesale orders.
Mike sold the business to Oscar in 1985 but he could not stay away from the cigar world. Six months after retiring Mike came to Oscar and asked to work part time and ended up full time again because the business was like family.
In 2005, Mike’s 1950 brand was released to celebrate 55 years of business. Manolo Quesada was commissioned to blend and produce the cigar. The Quesada family also produces Licenciados cigars for Mike’s Cigar as well as iconic brands such as Romeo y Julieta and Cubita.
The Mike’s 1950 blend is a smooth combination of Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco. Mike’s 1950 cigars are Hecho a Mano in the Dominican Republic and wrapped in Honduran tobacco.
The history of Mike’s Cigars is embedded in Mike’s 1950. Enjoy the fruits of labor from the father-son like partnership between Mike and Oscar as interpreted by the renowned blender Manolo.
