Introduced in 1999, Ashton VSG is the fuller-bodied side of the Ashton portfolio, built around a dark Ecuador Sumatra-seed wrapper grown under cloud-filtered sunlight and paired with aged Dominican binder and filler tobaccos. Made in the Dominican Republic by Arturo Fuente, the line is known for a richer, more forceful profile than traditional Ashton blends, with recurring notes of cedar, earth, espresso, black pepper, and leather.

The name VSG stands for Virgin Sun Grown, but the line’s identity is shaped as much by fermentation and aging as by wrapper origin. The result is a collection that helped define the market for premium cigars with greater body and depth at the end of the 1990s, while still retaining the polished construction associated with Fuente-made Ashton releases.

Its reputation has been reinforced by sustained critical recognition rather than a single isolated rating. Cigar Aficionado has repeatedly ranked Ashton VSG cigars among its notable annual selections, including the Spellbound at No. 10 in 2013 and the Sorcerer at No. 12 in 2020, underscoring the line’s long-standing place among mature, full-flavored Dominican cigars.
