A Bolder Spin on Monte
I think most would agree that it's always a pleasure to review a new Montecristo...well, new to me. This one comes in flat brown with an only slightly toothy wrapper, not oily at all. Firmness is a little squishy, 2/5. It looks and feels a little veiny-er than the classic Montecristos. Now let's see how it handles.
Firstly, great draw, trending on the loose side. The Nicaraguan tobaccos definitely bring more punch to the palate and it begins with lots of sweet earthiness to counter that new spice. I find hints of pine and coconut up front that slowly dry up as each inch drops off into a flaky white ash. It's a loose ash to go along with the loose nature of this stick. Dried red apple peels, burnt vanilla and a little meatiness like black pepper beef jerky. The draw remains consistent into the final third and those dried meat flavors continue to grow. Feels like it smokes a little faster than classic Montecristo, but it never burns too hot.
A pretty satisfying smoke when all is said and done. I think it flirts with heavy complexity, but stops just shy of that mark. Let's say an after lunch cigar, rather than the after dinner variety. I like it and I think the intermediate to experienced smoker will, too.
