La Libertad
LA LIBERTAD
founded in 1888 by a Swedish couple, Jean and Louise Villiger. The first Villiger cigar manufacture was opened in the small town of Pfeffikon, Switzerland.
Villiger has seen its fair share of hardship in company with its vast success. Less than 15 years after its start, Jean passed and Louise had to run the company on her own.
Under Louise’s management, Villiger not only lasted, it flourished. Villiger popularized the goose quill mouthpiece. Louise believed it was an ideal method to prevent tobacco from entering an aficionado’s mouth as they savored a cigar. Till this day the Kiel line of Villiger cigars, which features the mouthpiece, is one of the most popular of its kind in Europe.
The following Villiger generations took on the task of globally expanding. In 1955, Heinrich Villiger, the third generation, decided to start sourcing tobacco from Cuba. This expansion led to the creation of the Krumme line of cigars. The Krumme cigars have an uncommon shape known as Culebra, which consists of three small Panatela cigars which are braided into one.
The Villiger name became synonymous with quality and creativity. The World Exhibition of 1964 made Villiger an even bigger success. In 1977, Villiger started a Formula One team, which won the Zeltweg circuit in its first year. All the publicity combined and made Villiger one of the most respected cigar brands in the world.
The Cuban Embargo limited American aficionados’ access to Villiger cigars. After 1962, the American market deeply felt their absence. Luckily, El Mundo Del Tabaco GmbH was founded in 1997 as a subsidiary of Villiger to produce non-Cuban cigars for the American market. In 2010, the La Libertad brand was established to satisfy the needs of aficionados with high standards.
La Libertad cigars are Hecho A Mano, meaning they are made by hand, in the Dominican Republic. The complex blend of filler tobacco consists of Nicaraguan and Dominican leaves. La Libertad cigars have an exceptional Habano Peruvian wrapper, which means the seeds used to cultivate the Peruvian tobacco are Cuban.
In 2016, Villiger’s North American division was restructured and relocated to Miami, Florida. Rene Castaneda, former President of Miami Cigar & Co., and Robert Suter, a Swiss international business expert, were respectively named President and CEO of Villiger. With such talented leadership, the industry is excited to see what Villiger does next.
Cigar publications have given the several Villiger lines 90+ ratings. Cigar Aficionado, which has rated the cigars at 92, described the taste of La Libertad cigars as “a flavorful balance of vanilla, toast and cedar intonations before a floral finish.”
La Libertad roughly translates to “the liberty” and “the freedom”. What better way to celebrate your freedoms as an American than with a cigar that is named after them? Check out Mike’s Cigars’ collection of La Libertad.
