Jose Marti
JOSE MARTI
from all non-Latin influences including French and American. Marti believed in the right of his people to define themselves and he was the loudest voice of the revolution.
In the late 1800’s, Cuban political exiles fled to what is now Key West, FL. The cigar business flourished on the islands and their population skyrocketed from a few hundred to several thousand. The islands were producing millions of cigars and brought a concentration of wealth to the tiny patches of land.
Ybor City, a neighborhood in Tampa, Florida, is considered the Cigar Capital of the world and it all started in 1886. The cities location was ideal, Cuban tobacco was easily sourced and cigars could be produced at a much lower cost than in Cuba. Cuban torcedors who fled Cuba were the backbone of the city’s growth and development.
Marti would often visit Key West and be greeted by around 5,000 supporters. Marti was also a popular voice among the torcedors in Ybor City. He unified these wealthy Cuban communities and they in turn funded the grassroots uprising against the Spanish government in Cuba.
The message to begin the Cuban uprising was sent to Juan Gualberto Gomez, the insurgent leader, via a smuggled cigar. The directive was written on a slip of white paper that had been rolled into a cigar at the O’Halloran Cigar Factory in Tampa. Even though that particular uprising failed it was a step toward the beginning of the Spanish-American War and subsequently, Cuban freedom.
Marti was the spark behind the Cuba Libre movement. He died fighting for his passions and beliefs in the Battle of Dos Rios. However, his ideas live on among those who admire him, he is pictured on Cuban money and the H. Upmann factory was renamed after him.
In 1996, the first Jose Marti cigar was put into production. Many feel it was a long time coming because Marti meant so much to the torcedors who laid the foundation for the success of the cigar industry in America.
The Jose Marti cigars are produced at the Nicaraguan American Tobaccos S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The cigars are expertly blended using Dominican, Honduran and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos which are enveloped beneath a silky Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper. These cigars have mild to medium bodied strength just like the preferred cigars of Marti’s time.
Enjoying a Jose Marti cigar is an ideal method of freeing yourself from inhibition. It represents the strife and warfare that freed Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and other territories. These premium handmade cigars will not disappoint! Get a bargain for them here at Mike’s Cigars.
