During the Cold War there were about forty seven varieties of genetically pure cigar tobacco that was lost! With Cuba being embargoed by the U.S; they allied with the Soviet Union. With their interest in sugar and not in tobacco Cuba had abandoned research facilities and seeds for tobacco and stepped up their growing efforts for sugar cane.
For Fundacion Ancestral Tobacos De La Cordiallera their mission is to resurrect the pure cigar tobacco that was lost with the abandonment of tobacco facilities in Cuba during that time! With about forty-seven of them being lost, Tabacos de la Cordilliera were able to collect a bank of pure pre-Castro Cuban seeds! Which are now today being grown in Costa Rica, producing rich, complex, flavorful tobaccos!
