Rating80%Fonseca Predilectos Seconds No. 200SurprisingGiven the long standing Fonseca name, I was a bit surprised to see a bargain bundle of true long filler well constructed Fonseca's. With the terico aging and tripa Dominican filler I was curious. Upon arrival I noted they were very densely packed. Well constructed with minimal noticeable flaws if any. I will note that I let these rest about two weeks. Minus one I test smoked the day after arrival.
At light up, the first puff was a bit snug. Which does open up after the first third.
The flavor notes are different. Not necessarily bad or crazy good. It changes in progression once the draw begins to lighten. A heavy toasted syrupy tobacco note is at the base. With white pepper culminating around a slightly burnt caramel note. Into the second third I picked up on a heavy citrus note that coats the pallet. All of these shift fairly evenly from puff to puff. With a good amount of white pepper to round it all out.
So in a nutshell these are definitely divisive. I can understand not liking the flavor characteristics at first. But after a bit of rest and dry boxing, they do open up to an interesting smoke. Something about them feels old world. A slightly bitter barn yard note lingers about. Maybe this is due to the terico aging. With its slight vegetal flavor. It’s a hearty smoke void of nuance. I will be aging some of these a bit to see what happens. I have a hunch these will only better with time.
