El Cauto Rojo
EL CAUTO ROJO
deal of popularity in the cigar boom of the 90’s. El Cauto was and still is an extremely affordable cigar, something that was welcomed in the market chaos.
After the boom, a new game plan was taken. Perdomo Cigars took over production and began handcrafting the cigars. The Perdomo Factory is located in Estelí, Nicaragua. They sourced tobacco from the local area which has some of the best soil for tobacco production.
Those changes led El Cauto Rojo cigars to be a better cigar. Not only were they made with better leaves but more care went into the production of each one.
At some point in time, Oscar Boruchin, the late owner of the El Cauto brand, decided to change the production to Flor de Gonzalez. The production remains in Nicaragua but now it is rolled by a torcedors who are specialized in handmade Cuban style cigars.
Nicaraguan tobacco provides El Cauto Rojo cigars with a complex medium-bodied strength. The Nicaraguan blend is wrapped in a delicate Ecuadoran tobacco leaf.
Flor de Gonzalez is a dream come true for its founder, Arnaldo Gonzalez. Gonzalez learned the Cuban traditions of cigar making during his childhood in Santa Clara, Cuba. Gonzalez fled Cuba because of Fidel Castro’s communist regime and settled in Hialeah, a neighborhood in Miami, Florida.
Gonzalez’s production had a slow start. At first, the operation was a few hundred per week but the cigar boom catapulted the production into the thousands. When the boom ended in 1997 Gonzalez decided to move most of the production to Nicaragua instead of having the factory go up in smoke.
Boruchin also left Cuba because of the Cuban Revolution and he found a job as a taxi driver in Miami. Boruchin gradually merged into the cigar business and out of the transportation business. He quickly climbed up the corporate latter and became an executive for General Cigar Co.
Boruchin left the corporate world to work with a long time business associate, Mike Mersel. Mersel is the founder of Mike’s Cigars, one of the oldest cigar distributors in the United States. Boruchin was able to revamp and grow the business. Shaking up El Cauto Rojo was part of that process.
El Cauto Rojo is a Cuban sandwich cigar. This means it’s a mixture of short filler tobacco and long tobacco leaves for the wrapper and binder. Cuban torcedors smoke mostly Cuban sandwich cigars because long-filler cigars come with a higher price tag.
