OLIVA SERIE V

OLIVA SERIE V
The story behind Serie V stretches far beyond the creation of the blend itself. The Oliva family's tobacco heritage dates to 1886, when Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in Pinar del Río, Cuba. His work was interrupted by the Cuban War of Independence, during which he fought against Spain, but Melanio eventually returned to his fields and resumed growing tobacco.
In the early 1920s, Melanio's son Facundo Oliva assumed responsibility for the family's tobacco-growing operations and continued cultivating the family's fields for decades. Political upheaval in Cuba eventually forced another transformation. Facundo's son, Gilberto Oliva, moved from growing tobacco into brokering it before leaving Cuba and searching internationally for land capable of producing the tobacco character his family valued.
That search took Gilberto through Honduras, Panama, Mexico and even the Philippines before Nicaragua ultimately provided the fertile ground the family was looking for. Nicaragua would become central to the future of Oliva, and the family's experience growing Cuban-seed tobacco there helped establish the foundation for the cigars that followed.
The modern Oliva cigar company developed during the 1990s, but it was Serie V that would propel the name into another league. Introduced in the mid-2000s, Serie V represented a stronger and more complex direction for Oliva. The cigar quickly earned attention from enthusiasts and critics, eventually becoming one of the company's flagship lines.
At the heart of Oliva Serie V is a complex selection of Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos featuring specially fermented ligero from Nicaragua's Jalapa Valley. Ligero comes from the upper portion of the tobacco plant, where greater exposure to sunlight generally produces thicker, stronger leaves. Careful fermentation allows Oliva to harness that intensity while maintaining the balance that has become a defining characteristic of Serie V.
Those Nicaraguan fillers are joined by a Nicaraguan binder and finished beneath a high-priming Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper. The combination creates a rich smoking profile in which strength works alongside complexity rather than overwhelming it. Oliva describes Serie V as displaying rich coffee and dark chocolate tones accompanied by a subtle, well-balanced spice.
That balance between power and refinement helped Serie V earn significant critical recognition. The Serie V Torpedo received a 94-point rating from Cigar Aficionado in 2007 and was selected among the publication's best cigars of that year. Other Serie V vitolas have continued to receive strong ratings and recognition from major cigar publications, establishing the line as far more than a single standout size.
Serie V also provided the foundation for one of the greatest successes in Oliva history: the creation of Oliva Serie V Melanio. Introduced in 2012 as a tribute to Melanio Oliva, the Melanio line built upon the Serie V concept with its own distinctive blend and presentation. In 2014, the Serie V Melanio Figurado earned an extraordinary 96-point rating and was named Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year.
While Serie V Melanio has developed a celebrated identity of its own, the original Oliva Serie V remains the cigar that helped transform Oliva's reputation among premium cigar smokers. Its success demonstrated that substantial strength, Nicaraguan ligero and sophisticated blending could coexist in a cigar that remained balanced and approachable enough to enjoy again and again.
Today, Oliva Serie V Cigars are available in an extensive selection of vitolas, allowing smokers to experience the blend in everything from slender formats to commanding large-ring cigars. Each size changes the relationship between wrapper and filler slightly, giving enthusiasts an opportunity to discover their preferred expression of the celebrated Serie V blend.
For aficionados searching for a rich Nicaraguan cigar with proven pedigree, Oliva Serie V remains an essential smoke. Generations of tobacco knowledge, carefully fermented Jalapa ligero, an Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper and years of critical acclaim come together in a cigar that helped define the modern Oliva name.
From the first draw to the final ash, Oliva Serie V proves that a powerful cigar doesn't have to sacrifice balance. It is bold Nicaraguan tobacco shaped by more than a century of family experience—and a line that has earned its place among the modern classics of premium cigars.
