QUINTERO (discontinued)

Since 1924, Quintero cigars have won over aficionados of all walks of life. The beloved brand was at first, an outlier and it grew to be one of the most commercially successful brands in Cuba.
The full brand name is officially Quintero y Hno, which translates to Quintero and brother. The Quintero brothers – there was five of them – established a cigar factory in Cienfuegos, Cuba
in the Vuelta Arriba region. At that time, it was unheard of because all the factories were located closer the prestigious Vuelta Abajo region.
The Quintero blend was unlike that of mainstream cigars. Quintero cigars have herbal notes and a sweet finish. The industry experts did not expect these cigars to become a success but they gained a national audience and were especially popular in Spain.
In 1960, Fidel nationalized the tobacco industry in Cuba. In doing so, thousands of cigar brands were abandoned and a state-run tobacco company took over. They only produced a select 25 brands, including Quintero.
During the first years of the revolution, the state-run tobacco company decided to make the Quintero cigars with a machine instead of torcedors. This decision led to a decrease in the brand’s popularity and it was downgraded from a global brand to a multi-local.
In the early 1960’s, the Cuban Embargo took place and changed the composition of the cigar industry. Due to the embargo, Cuban cigar brands were no longer recognized in America, this led to several brands being registered in America. The logo and design would remain the same but the American registered brands do not feature Cuban tobacco.
Tabacalera S.A., a Spanish tobacco monopoly, registered the Quintero brand in the 1980’s. In 1999, Tabacalera S.A. merged with France’s tobacco monopoly, SEITA, to form Altadis. After the merger, the non-Cuban Quintero got a seductive makeover to compete with other Altadis favorites, such as Montecristo and H. Upmann.
The non-Cuban Quintero cigars are produced in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras. Honduras and Nicaragua Tobaccos S.A. handcrafts these alluring cigars. Quintero cigars feature Nicaraguan and Honduran long-filler tobacco in a Cuban-seed Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper.
Connoisseurs across the globe love the medium bodied and full flavor profile of Quintero cigars. Cigar Aficionado has rated the non-Cuban Quintero cigars at 90 or above numerous times and more so than its Cuban counterpart.
