MUWAT

MUWAT (discontinued)

Born as a collaboration between Drew Estate, Subculture Studio, and Joya de Nicaragua, MUWAT Cigars is an acronym for My Uzi Weighs A Ton. And yes, that is also the name of a Public Enemy track.
In 2010, Jonathan Drew, of Drew Estates, was at a consumer blending session for the first Cigar Safari at Joya de Nicaragua when he created the blend for MUWAT. One year later, the brand took the cigar
world by storm.
The blend consists of tobacco from both Drew Estate and Joya de Nicaragua. Drew Estate provides Brazilian Mata Fina for the filler, the Ecuadoran-grown Connecticut-seed binder, and the San Andreas Negro Wrapper. Joya de Nicaragua provides Nicaraguan tobacco for the filler and their torcedors roll the cigar.
The name MUWAT is drawn from the large ring size. Jonathan first rolled a 6x60 and someone called it an Uzi. When Jonathan picked up a bundle of 50 he uttered “Damn, my Uzi weighs a ton” everyone had some laughs and the name stuck.
MUWAT is under Subculture Studio because Drew Estate sees a lot of creative potential in the brand. They have taken a lot of visionary freedom with the brand, after all, that is the Subculture Studio style. Originally, MUWAT was pre-released with no band until Subculture Studio designed a logo that is printed onto the paper bag-like band using a silk screen.
In 2012, MUWAT EF Bait Fish EF was released to national distribution, EF, or Extra Fuerte, due to it possessing a stronger blend than traditional MUWAT cigars. The line was previously exclusive to New Havana Cigar shop but Dan Welsh, the owner, gave his blessing for the distribution to become national.
It took over two years to perfect the MUWAT Kentucky Fire Cured line and bring it to the public in 2013. The trickiest part of blending was getting the fire-cured tobacco to maintain a consistent burn throughout the cigar. The Kentucky Fire Cured line also has a Swamp Thing and Swamp Rat extension which features a standout green Candela wrapper and has been described as a “deeply disturbing yet pleasing smoke”.
Steve Saka, the former president of Drew Estate, says “If you try to make a blend that everyone likes, you won’t make a blend that anyone will love.” Though Cigar Aficionado liked the cigar and gave the original blend excellent ratings.
Drew Estate is known for being an unconventional cigar brand and the MUWAT brand is where they let loose and experiment with their most untraditional ideas. The only way to find out if you love MUWAT cigars is to try them for yourself. Can you hang with the unconventional connoisseurs?
