LA UNICA

La Unica translates to “the only”. When La Unica was first released it stood out among its counterparts and soon other companies followed suit. The brand came from the dream team collaboration between Sanford Newman of J.C. Newman and Carlos Fuente Sr. of Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia.
The Newman family has been in the cigar industry since 1895. J.C. Newman was the first to individually
wrap its cigars in cellophane. This technique preserves the quality of cigars and has become an industry standard.
The legacy of J.C. Newman was established in Ohio but the company moved to Tampa and expanded to the Dominican Republic. The company is known for several premium brands including Diamond Crown, Brick House, and Cuesta-Rey.
The Fuente family entered the tobacco industry in 1912 when Carlo’s father, Arturo founded A. Fuente & Company. Carlos’ wife, Anna, began working as a roller in the Cuesta-Rey factor in the late 1950’s. Carlos expanded the business and gained a lot of notoriety with two distributors, one in Miami and the other in Manhattan.
When Carlos got word that there might be an embargo on Cuban goods, he bought up all the Cuban tobacco he could. That stockpile lasted three years and it solidified the A. Fuente name in the market and then it grew to be a brand aficionados trusted.
In 1986, these two friends struck up a deal.  Sanford challenged Carlos to create a value premium cigar that was velvety and rich enough to hold up against the more expensive cigars.
One way they achieved a low price point was selling the cigars in cellophane bundles instead of boxes.  At that time, only factory seconds were sold in bundles but once again the Newman family doing things their own way.
Carlos picked the cigar sizes and Sanford approved the blend. Within 6 months of its release, La Unica was the number one premium bundle in the United States. Cigar Aficionado gave it a rated the cigar at 90.
The La Unica blends feature long-filler tobacco from the Dominican Republic. The wrappers are all from Connecticut. There are two wrapper options which include a Connecticut shade natural wrapper or a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper.
In 1991, the Fuente family and the Newman family began a partnership known as the Fuente and Newman Company. The purpose of the venture is to promote cigar sales in America. They were so successful that in 2016 the mayor of Tampa named a street in the Ybor City neighborhood Carlos Fuente’s Way.
In 2007, the brand got a facelift. The premium cigars are now available in slide lid cedar boxes. What did not change? The cigars are still handmade at the A. Fuente factory in the Dominican Republic.
Cooperation, dedication, and family tradition led to the success of this brand. The best of both worlds has been achieved with La Unica cigars. You can get impeccable quality at affordable prices. Buy them from Mike’s Cigars to get an incredible deal.
