FUNDACION ANCESTRAL (discontinued)

Fundacion Ancestral translates to Ancestral Foundation. The tobaccos used in these cigars are carefully cultivated from pure ancestral Cuban seeds.  Tabacos de la Cordillera, the production company behind Fundacion Ancestral, is committed to creating unique and innovative cigar lines.
Tabacos de la Cordillera translates to tobacco of the mountain range. The name is an accurate representation
of where the tobacco comes from. All the tobacco used in Fundacion Ancestral is grown on luscious mountainsides in Costa Rica.
Tabacos de la Cordillera was founded by Filippo Guani in 2000. His vision is to restore the flavors and complexities of cigars from before the Cold War. It is believed that over 45 varieties of Cuban tobacco were lost due to the war combined with industry neglect.
Guani believes that the mountains of Costa Rica are the perfect location to recreate those tasty flavors common in Cuban tobaccos. The high elevation is a natural way to prevent crop infestations because the pesky critters do not survive in the environmental conditions. The mountain soil is also rich in nutrients due to the region’s ideal microclimate.
During the company’s infant stages, Guani brought in John Vogel, an agricultural expert who specializes in tobacco. Vogel shares Guani’s philosophy and has helped develop the fields and subsequently the brand. Their seed-bank started out with 47 rare varieties of pure Cuban tobacco.
Vogel is also a skilled torcedor and he has invented a new rolling technique known as Bull’s-eye Ligero. The rolling skill implements elements of the classic Cuban entubado style but bunches all the Ligero leaves in the middle. The result is a bull’s-eye pattern on the foot of a cigar and an even burn throughout.
The Fundacion Ancestral brand debuted in the United States in 2007. Each line is named after the region and year when the tobacco featured in that line was available to major Cuban tobacconists. Lines include Vuelta Abajo 1940, Artemisa 1944, and Pinar del Rio 1941.
In 2015, Philip Gregory Wynne of Felipe Gregorio Cigars partnered with Tabacos de la Cordillera. Wynne added and reblended several of his lines in order to feature Costa Rican tobaccos.
Three passionate tobacconists are collaborating to create mind-boggling medium to full-bodied cigars. They have developed and expanded a niche market that has a growing and dedicated following. StogieRates.com only has 90+ ratings for Fundacion Ancestral cigars.
Fundacion Ancestral is an anomaly. The makers have taken an unconventional approach in order to recreate conventional Cuban cigars.  Not many aficionados get the chance to experience something so exceptional, get your hands on a Fundacion Ancestral cigar here at Mike’s Cigars.
