CUBITA

Cubita is Spanish slang for “little Cuba” and also a city in Cuba. Cubita is an apt name for the brand which brings an alternative taste of Cuba to aficionados around the world, including those in the United States.
Manuel “Manolo” Quesada is the mastermind behind the Cubita cigar. The Quesada family has been working in the tobacco industry since the late 1800’s.
The Quesada family had one of the few Cuban tobacco operations that also worked with tobacco from other countries. In 1929, they were in search of different tobaccos and decided to start brokering Dominican tobacco.
Due to the Cuban Revolution, the Quesada family had to flee Cuba. The Quesada family settled in Santiago, Dominican Republic and Manolo was sent to Miami, Florida to finish his education. In 1974, the family established the Manufactura de Tabacos S. A., now known as Quesada Cigars, and started producing cigars.
In a way, the Quesada family was not exactly prepared to start crafting cigars. They were asked by Juan Sosa, owner of Antillian Cigars, to start a mutually beneficial partnership. Sosa met Manolo in Miami and it was decided the Sosa would manage distribution in the United States. The factory started out with “$100, a chair, and a phone”, according to Manolo it was a small operation.
Since that time, the operation has grown significantly. One of the key brands they first produced was the mellow non-Cuban Fonseca brand. Due to the Cuban Embargo, several Cuban cigar brands were registered in America and produced similar cigars using non-Cuban tobacco. The Quesada family became a go-to manufacturer for non-Cuban versions of brands that were once Cuban, based on their work with brands such as Romeo y Julieta.
In 1987, the Cubita line was released to compliment the popular Fonseca line. They have similar profiles but Cubita cigars contain a bit more Ligero and thus are stronger and range from medium-bodied to full-bodied.
Cubita cigars feature Cuban seed tobacco from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. The Cubita Spanish Market Selection, which was blended for aficionados in Spain, has become one of the most popular Cubita lines and is full-bodied.
Quesada Cigars is one of the few distinguished cigar factories in the prestigious Pro Cigar Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers.  The well-liked Cubita brand confirms the quality that Quesada has to offer.
The Quesada family has earned a superb reputation because they stayed strong through the highs and lows of the market. They have stayed flexible and this skill helped them maintain their success. Manolo expressed that Cubita cigars are priced to be an affordable everyday cigar.
