\u201cLearning the Language of the Leaf.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

As I began laying out my notes for the second installment of The Frugal Aficionado, fully intending to discuss cigar wrapper leaves, it occurred to me that there was one topic that warranted review before we can properly discuss the different tobaccos contained in a premium cigar.<\/p>\n

Before we discuss such things as wrappers, binders, and filler blends it is very important that we \u201cLearn the Language of the Leaf.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Flipping through the pages of any cigar magazine, Mike\u2019s Cigars catalog or online store<\/a> one finds a virtually unending array of wrapper, binder, and filler tobaccos used in the creation of premium cigars.\u00a0 Manufacturers offer names, some easy to understand, some not so easy, some which are outright confusing, to describe the leaves selected for their secret blends.<\/p>\n

What is the budding aficionado to do?<\/p>\n

\u201cRead\u201d the leaf!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fortunately, the way in which premium cigar tobaccos are named follows something of a \u201crule.\u201d\u00a0 Cigar tobaccos tend to follow an \u201cA+B+C\u201d formula, which once understood will serve as a guide for the aficionado assessing a premium cigar to ascertain its characteristics.\u00a0 In this article, I will explain how premium cigar tobaccos get their names, what the names mean to the cigar, and how to use your new found knowledge to locate cigars likely to fit your individual tastes.<\/p>\n

In Part One of this series<\/a>, we learned how to take notes about our cigars which contains the basic information about each cigar brand we sample. \u00a0We learned that at a minimum, we should know the country of origin of each leaf; wrapper, binder and filler.\u00a0 In addition to knowing where each leaf was grown, there is often much more information available.\u00a0 Here are some of the finer details that often accompany the country of origin of each leaf.\u00a0 Below is an example of some notes from Part One, the cigar; the Oliva Serie V \u201cMelanio.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

As you can see, I\u2019ve noted the wrapper is an \u201cEcuadorian Sumatra-seed,\u201d the binder \u201cNicaraguan,\u201d and the filler blend, also from Nicaragua.\u00a0 Often, manufacturers will include more information about their blend including\u2026<\/p>\n

          A tobacco varietal, or type of seed, is often referred to as a \u201cgenotype<\/em>,\u201d from the genes<\/em> carried in the tobacco seed.\u00a0 The combination of genotype plus<\/strong> external factors like country of origin and production methods together is called the \u201cphenotype<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

          Learning to \u201cread\u201d tobacco leaf information is easiest if you think about it like diagraming a sentence.\u00a0 (Remember this from grade school?)\u00a0 Most every manufacturer shares some information about the three basic components of their product: wrapper, binder, and filler blend.<\/p>\n

          Below I\u2019ve listed some examples of wrapper varietals<\/em> from several premium cigars featured in the most recent issue of Cigar Journal<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve used a single underline to highlight the country of origin<\/em>, bold <\/strong>to indicate the tobacco varieta<\/em>l, and a bold underlined<\/strong> to highlight any additional \u201cclues\u201d pertaining to character the leave.\u00a0 Each cigar brand name is linked to more information about the brand for reference.<\/p>\n

          Rocky Patel Vintage 1990<\/a>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Honduran Broadleaf<\/strong><\/p>\n

          CAO Concert<\/a>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ecuadorian Habano<\/strong> Rosado<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Oliva Serie V \u201cMelanio\u201d<\/a>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Romeo Y Julieta Reserva Real<\/a>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Alec Bradley American Classic Blend<\/a>: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Honduran Connecticut-seed<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Torano Vault<\/a>: \u00a0\u00a0 Nicaraguan Shade-grown<\/strong><\/p>\n

          As you can see from the examples above, there is a huge variety of black cigar tobacco grown throughout the world.\u00a0 Most cigars blend leaves from several growing regions, different primings, and different types to develop the taste and aroma profile desired.<\/p>\n

          Now, let\u2019s take a look at a few of these leaves and \u201cdiagram\u201d them\u2026<\/p>\n

          Example 1:\u00a0\u00a0 Nicaraguan Shade-grown<\/p>\n

          Our first example is the most basic.\u00a0 The Torano Vault utilizes a shade-grown leaf from Nicaragua.\u00a0 We\u2019re not told the varietal of tobacco, although one can imply some \u201cHabano\u201d seed variety.\u00a0 Knowing the wrapper leaves were grown under shade, as opposed to \u201csun-grown,\u201d hints that they will be a milder, smoother leaf.<\/p>\n

          Example 2:\u00a0 Mexican San Andres maduro<\/p>\n

          \"\"<\/p>\n

          The Siglo Limited Reserve Maduro from Altadis, USA features a San Andres seed, maduro wrapper leaf grown in Mexico.\u00a0 The San Andres seed is one of the few \u201cpure\u201d black tobacco varietals and produces a thick and hearty leaf.\u00a0 Knowing the wrapper is from Mexico gives us an idea about the character of the leaf, its flavors and aromas.\u00a0 The fact that the wrapper is a maduro we can also imply that there will be a slight sweetness to the wrapper.<\/p>\n

          Example 3:\u00a0 Ecuadorian Habano Rosado<\/p>\n

          \"\"<\/p>\n

          Here is an example of a manufacturer utilizing a wrapper of a specific color, Rosado<\/em>, in the manufacture of a blend.\u00a0 For the C.A.O. Concert line, leaves of a particular color (or \u201cwrapper shade<\/em>\u201d) were separated as part of the wrapper sorting process and set aside.\u00a0 When preparing the blend for the C.A.O. Concert, the C.A.O. blend team purchased these leaves specifically for their color and the character the leaves impart to the blend.\u00a0 The leaves are from the cloud covered fields of Ecuador, so they will be a finer leaf, thinner than a sun grown wrapper.\u00a0 Finally, they are derived from a \u201cHabano\u201d seed varietal which gives us an idea of their flavor and aromas.<\/p>\n

          Now we\u2019ve seen how the different cigar tobaccos names are derived, let\u2019s look at how this can help us.\u00a0 If you\u2019re reading this, and made it this far, it\u2019s likely that you are more than a one or two-a-year cigar smoker.\u00a0 Based on this assumption, I feel it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ve sampled at least five or ten different brands of premium cigars in your career.\u00a0 It\u2019s also likely that you have one or two that you really prefer.<\/p>\n

          What we\u2019re going to do is a little homework assignment.\u00a0 Hey, this is \u201ccigar school\u201d after all\u2026 Did you really think you\u2019d get off that easy?<\/p>\n

          Here it is:<\/p>\n

          1. If you haven\u2019t already read Part One of this series<\/a>, please click here to read it.\u00a0 It will help in your understanding of this lesson.<\/li>\n
          2. The written assignment\u2026\u00a0 Take out a sheet of paper, 3\u00d75 cards, or whatever you\u2019ve chosen to keep your cigar notes on.\u00a0 (You read Part One and picked a method, right?)\u00a0 Go online and look up your favorite two or three cigar brands. (Try MikesCigars.com<\/a>)\u00a0 Once you find them, using your chosen note keeping method, record the wrapper, binder, and filler leaf<\/strong> information.\u00a0 Be sure to note what country your cigars were made in and if possible, by what company.\u00a0 Document as much information about the tobaccos found in your cigars as possible.<\/li>\n
          3. Cigar thought:\u00a0 Look at the brands you chose for the written exercise.\u00a0 Think about each cigar individually.\u00a0 What draws you to this particular brand?\u00a0 Are there particular flavors or aromas that you find pleasing in the blend?\u00a0 Is it mild, medium, or full bodied?\u00a0 How about the others?\u00a0 Are there similarities and differences in the cigars\u2019 characters?\u00a0 Are there similarities in the leaves used in each blend?<\/li>\n
          4. Keep your notes handy, we\u2019ll be using them in Part Three of The Frugal Cigar Aficionado soon!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Being able to identify those features one prefers in a cigar, be it flavors, certain spices or aromatic qualities, full-bodied boldness, or mellow, refined mildness, which one prefers in a cigar is the first step in becoming an educated cigar aficionado.<\/p>\n

            By learning the particulars that make up your individual tastes<\/em> will be invaluable as you look to expand your repertoire of cigars.\u00a0 As you begin to invest in cigar accessories like humidors, you will save countless dollars by stocking up with cigars that you know you like rather than some you simply smoke.<\/p>\n

            Cigars are a unique treat to be slowly savored and enjoyed.\u00a0 Not many things in life can be appreciated at the level of a fine, handmade premium cigar and the deeper your understanding, the deeper your appreciation.<\/p>\n
